Grazing in the meadows were the aurochs, or wild ox, and the wisent, or bison.

It is uncertain whether the Wisent does not also occur in Siberia.

Modern naturalists identify the elk with the eland, the wisent with the auerochs.

The urus survived in Germany as late as the seventeenth century, while a few of the bison or 'wisent' survive to the present time.
