During the early months of 1797 he commanded a column at Bologna, and was present at the capitulation of Mantua.

In the latter part of his life, he appears to have removed from Cremona to Mantua, his labels bearing date from thence.

In the following year he again distinguished himself at the second battle of Rivoli and at the siege of Mantua.

After Castiglione he returned to his task round Mantua and gallantly repulsed all sorties.
